Bruce's Story

MY LIFE: As Johnny Winter said, "Still alive and well". Surprising to many, including myself. Growing up in Vernon/Rockville, CT as a teen, education was the last thing on my priority list. The old saying, "sex, drugs and rock & roll" were number one on that list. Parental intervention found it best to locate my priorties elsewhere, so I was relocated to Tolland CT schools where most of my time was served under suspension or I didn't bother attending at all! Upstate New York was next. There on the banks of the Hudson River, I met more chasing the same goals whom I quickly became friends with. They were great years no doubt in many ways, but while there I did complete school with good grades... (Again a surprise, but it delghted my parents).. Some classmates I'd met there from all parts of the world, are still friends today! Returning to Vernon, I gained the alias, "Captain Keg"! If everyone has ten minutes of fame, it was mine! Celebrity status for something I enjoyed besides... Life coundn't be better I thought! Newspaper interviews, town council meetings defending "drinkers rights" were on my business agenda. The Captain Keg days brought me back to Vernon where upon I didn't so much choose bad friends, just friends who shared bad habits. Many, sadly, are no longer here but have gone on. Drugs and alcohol so often the blame. I was married at 35 for my first time, to my daughters mother who had child on the way. A drunken dream that had come true. We had known one another all our lives... For whatever reason (my guess is it was my daughter) I laid to rest many bad habits, and said goodbye to many of my old ways. As I often say these days, "I spent eighteen years being eighteen". Watching those die since that day back in 1992 was hard to say the least. To be young, yet out survive so many friends brings sadness. To have survived it myself, brings great joy and opened my eyes and heart to gratitude, and a new outlook on life! My friend "Ginch" as he was called died in 2000. He and I were friends for many years, and he fathered a child with a half-sister of mine. We spent years hangin' together, partying together, and laughing with one another. A fifth in our hands, speakers on the roof with Hot Tuna blaring and hair half way down our backs were the early things in common. Years and years of friendship followed. His deat...Expand for more
h came eight years after I put all my destructive habits behind me. He was proud of my accomplishments, but never fully jumped aboard himself. My joys today are my daughter Callie Jo, and my niece who looks and reminds me so much of her father... By God's grace, I am here, and still very much alive and well! After my parents deaths in 1995 and 1998, I bought out my siblings in the spring of 2000 and today I live ironically - right where life all started. Many blessings have come my way since the year 1992. Life is good these days indeed, and I'm happy being here, and me. I'm a carpenter working for myself as a contractor, and surviving fine working as that too. I've kept a web site since 2003 for personal pleasure and fun. By having it, I can share much more about my life or memories of friends such as Ginch.. I laugh today looking back at those crazy years, and do so with gratitude for all those still here... Through classmates I've reconected with a few friends from way back - some pursuing the very same things as myself. "Sanity".. Better than a second chance at life, is knowing a person the second time around, who like myself, is alive and doing well. What a blessing it is know Dave W. not once, but twice - and blessed knowing a true friend these days, and in a different light! Where I'm living today, holds many memories of early life. The name that "some kid long ago" carved in his bedroom window sill is still there, some forty-five years later! I have to laugh because, that friggin kid as my dad my have thought was me! I'm still called Keg by many who tell me these days, they're surprised too I'm still alive, and by those who know me by no other name then just that... Seeing my old nickname once again in a local newspaper article during 2008 - had some friends calling, and we shared good laughs.. Then, seeing that after 30 years, my name still came up at local town meeetings - I went to say hello to a few faces that have been seated there since the creation of time... One, whom I know well and personally these days smiled when I walked up - then I introduced myself to the rest smiling, and said, "I know what it was like at the park back then - I was there.. I know because I'm the one some of you still insist on calling, Captain Keg"... But like the carving etched in the wood - I'm still, and always will be just Bruce... PEACE
